This year, the Society's lunch took on a particular significance, in the 500th anniversary year of the foundation of the House (in 1525, as Cardinal College). It was held in the great Hall, which made it feel very special.
Over 20 years ago, I decided that I wanted to give something back to the College which had been so welcoming and supportive to me from from 1978 to 1981, when I was there studying clinical medicine. Dean Christopher Lewis sent me a handwritten letter to thank me for what would “eventually—very eventually” (his words) come to the College. I have returned to the College for the annual lunch as often as I have been able, and it is always such a pleasure to meet old friends and to meet new people, from across the generations, all mindful of the privilege that it has been to be alumni of such a great institution.
After drinks in the SCR Garden, lunch in Hall was magnificent in all senses. Canon John Paton said Grace, and short but eloquent and powerful speeches were given, before lunch by Professor Michael Bentley, who spoke for the Dean (who was abroad for a 500th anniversary event), and after lunch by Jennifer Burton, on behalf of the Development and Alumni team. I felt reminded of the importance of securing the future of the College, and in particular its ability to support the very talented young people who might not otherwise be able to study here. After lunch Dr Bernard Richards (1963), emeritus fellow of Brasenose, gave a marvellous lecture in the Sir Michael Dummett Lecture Theatre, on John Ruskin (also a Christ Church alumnus), and showed us the most wonderful collection of images, many of Oxford, which were truly remarkable.
