TORONTO GATHERING

At the end of September, Christ Church hosted a dinner at the University of Toronto Club. The evening brought together former Members living in and around Toronto – many meeting for the first time.

Over good food and lively conversation, we shared stories from our time at the House – favourite memories, amusing anecdotes, and ideas for what to revisit on our next trip back to Oxford. Between us, we represented an extraordinary span of sixty-six years of Christ Church history, from one member who matriculated in 1959 to others currently completing their postgraduate studies.

It’s an incredible feeling to be part of this institution’s rich tapestry, now marking its 500th year. Development Director Philippa Roberts shared updates on the college’s recent developments and future plans, including the new graduate centre and the launch of the Centre for Entrepreneurship – Oxford Edge – both a testament to Christ Church’s commitment to evolving with the times while continuing to equip its members for a changing world.

Philippa also reminded us that once a Member, always a Member, and that the college warmly welcomes us back whenever we visit – often making the occasion memorable by arranging a favourite room for our stay or access to a treasured text in the ever-growing library.

I’m delighted to now know a group of Christ Church friends here in Toronto. Though some of us may be far from home, and all afar from Oxford, that evening – transporting us, for a moment, back to the Great Hall – was a reminder that we are never truly far from the heart and spirit of the House.
