Now a Principal Medical Writer with over a decade of experience in the Medical Communications industry, Maya offered a valuable insider’s perspective on a sector that continues to grow in influence and opportunity.

The evening combined networking, a presentation, and an open Q&A, giving students the chance to engage directly with an alumna who has navigated the transition from Oxford to a dynamic scientific career. Maya began by introducing the landscape of Medical Communications, an industry that supports pharmaceutical companies in communicating complex scientific information to clinicians and disease specialists, and internal stakeholders in the pharmaceutical field.

She highlighted the broad scope of work within the field, from above-brand scientific events and educational or training materials, to digital content and promotional communication campaigns; and emphasised the collaborative, multidisciplinary nature of the industry. Students were particularly interested in the diverse career pathways available, spanning Medical Writing, Editorial Services, and Client Services, each offering unique skillsets and development routes.

Reflecting on her own time at Christ Church, Maya underscored how the Oxford experience provides a strong grounding for success in Medical Communications. The analytical rigour of exams, the depth of dissertation work, and the pace of learning across varied modules all contribute to essential professional skills. She noted that the tutorial system mirrors many aspects of the workplace: active participation in discussions, constructive feedback, and the need to communicate ideas with clarity and confidence.

Maya also guided attendees through what new graduates can expect when entering the industry, from early training and typical project responsibilities to the supportive environment created for those just starting out. She shared examples of print materials produced in the sector and offered resources for those interested in learning more. The event concluded with a thoughtful Q&A, during which students raised questions about career progression, entry requirements, and the future of the industry.

We are always delighted to welcome alumni back to present careers talks, and offer advice about their chosen field, to current Members (in conjunction with the JCR Careers Rep). If you would be willing to offer your help, please conact us.
