The commissioning process for a fine new pipe organ to stand at the East End / Crossing of the Cathedral is underway, with floor surveys of its proposed location. A romantic-style instrument is needed to provide choral accompaniment and facilitate the playing of organ music of the mid-nineteenth century and later. It will complement our Rieger Organ, which is particularly distinguished in the performance of earlier repertoire. The current temporary instrument, located in the Chancel, is being removed for the surveys to take place, and being replaced with a Viscount digital organ during the interim period.
The Cathedral’s Choirs have made permanent their move to the Chancel of the Cathedral, rather than the Nave, so there is also urgent need for the new organ to be in close proximity to their new location.
