We are very excited to have lent ten gold Mohurs and one Moghul gold coin, with Emperor Jahangir and a Persian inscription on the reverse, to the 'Great Mughals: Art, Architecture and Opulence' exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
The gold Mohur coins have the signs of the Zodiac on them and the Moghul gold coin has the Emperor Jahangir (r. 1605-1627) and a Persian inscription on the reverse. The coins were the gift of Dr Richard Browne, Regius Professor of Hebrew 1774–1780, and are now on deposit to the Ashmolean Museum.
This exhibition celebrates the extraordinary creative output and internationalist culture of the Golden Age of the Mughal Court (c. 1560-1660) during the reigns of its most famous emperors: Akbar (r. 1556-1605), Jahangir (r. 1605-1627) and Shah Jahan (r. 1628-1658). The exhibition explores how a huge Iranian influence permeated the sophisticated craft traditions of the Indian subcontinent to create a distinctively Mughal court are included: from contemporary portraits to jewelled gold vessels and carpets.
The exhibition runs from November 2024 to May 2025.
