It’s difficult to capture into words the sight of Old Tom again, a stolid friend to us at a time of volatile spirits, who watched over us when we didn’t know it all – but did. This was my first thought as I returned to the House for Christ Church Association Day. I saw alumni alight from their cars one by one, many with families in tow, some still fresh-faced, others wearing the weight of a great many years beyond those under Tom’s gaze.  With cheerful smiles, the volunteers greeted us and led us to our punts to kick things off.  Some of us were rustier than others but, for all, the memory of gowns billowing, red carnation proud on our breast, punting our farewell to Trinity, was just beneath the surface.

After lunch we were treated to a talk on Lewis Carroll and logic by the excellent Dr Fabian Pregel. This was especially well-received, no doubt, as we were mercifully free from the threat of collections. Logical conundrums still swimming around in my head, Tom tolled 6pm five minutes late and on time. The cathedral swelled with Evensong that elevated us with sensus divinitatis, before we descended, once again, to our old shenanigans at the Buttery. Finally, we unhappy and unworthy people sat down to give our most reverent thanks in the Great Hall.

To everyone involved who worked tirelessly to give us back something we thought we had lost, I extend my sincerest thanks.  Goodbye, Tom. Until next year.
