Jon joined the Foundation on 1 April 2009, appointed by architect Jane Kennedy to lead what was then a deceptively simple brief: managing the House’s buildings maintenance programme. His impact, however, has proved far broader. From the conclusion of the Blue Boar Quad and Library refurbishments in 2009 to major restoration and conservation schemes in recent years, Down has overseen an extraordinary range of projects.

Among his most significant achievements are the renovation of Meadows 3 and its tower; refurbishment of Meadows 6 and 7; repair and conservation of the Hall ceiling – widely regarded as a landmark undertaking; and the complete refurbishment of Peckwater Quad and Canterbury 1 and 2. His work also includes the Porters’ Lodge refurbishment, the Thatched Barn scheme, 117 St Aldate’s, the Chapter House, a ground source heat pump installation beneath the rugby pitch, the jubilee bridge, the choir roof restoration and the Deanery refurbishment. In 2023, two of the major projects he oversaw received Oxford Preservation Trust Awards.

These headline schemes sit atop a long list of other works, including masonry conservation, estate-wide lift installations, RAAC remediation in Bachelors’ Row, improvements to the Boathouse and Meadow Cottages, Cathedral tower works and upgrades to kitchen facilities.

Throughout his time at the House, Jon has been a knowledgeable, calm and highly professional colleague, and a valued member of the Treasury Team. We wish him a rewarding and fulfilling retirement.
